Orthodontic Treatment and Dental Emergencies
During orthodontic treatment, patients may occasionally encounter dental emergencies that require prompt attention. These emergencies typically fall into two categories:
Emergencies Related to Orthodontic Appliances
At Weston Orthodontic Associates, we understand that orthodontic appliances may break or become displaced. If you experience any of the following issues, please contact our office to schedule an appointment during regular patient hours. We prioritize scheduled appointments to ensure the best care for all our patients:
- Loose Bands, Brackets, or Wires: Contact our office promptly for repair.
- Tie Wire Irritation: Cover with orthodontic wax or tuck under the archwire using a pencil eraser or Q-tip.
- Broken or Protruding Archwire: Attempt to adjust with a pencil eraser or cut with nail clippers; if unable to resolve, contact our office for assistance.
Direct Injuries to the Mouth and Teeth
If you experience a direct injury to your mouth or teeth, whether during orthodontic treatment or not, take immediate action:
- Apply Ice: Immediately apply ice to the affected area to reduce swelling.
- Contact Your Dentist: Contact your regular dentist as soon as possible for further evaluation and treatment. X-rays may be necessary to assess the extent of the injury.
- For Orthodontic Appliances: If your orthodontic appliance is dislodged or displaced, contact us after seeing your dentist to arrange for repair or adjustment based on your comfort.
After Office Hours
In case of an orthodontic emergency outside of regular office hours, please contact our office. We will provide you with further instructions on whom to contact for additional assistance.
